Wildlife in Florida

Stinging Nettle
There are countless images of the world and of ourselves on our digital landscape. Every image is a feature of our reality, a moment in time--past, present, future, or possible or impossible. A stinging nettle strikes the skin and begins the intensive choreography of irritation and pain, followed by the ballet of histamine and thrombocytes and the like. OUCH! The same effect is lost on the insect that rests on this stinging nettle. It has a simpler reality, with a simpler set of instinctive instructions.

Species Information

This plant is known as a stinging nettle; Tread Softly, Finger Rot, spurge nettle, bullnettle, bull nettle. It lives in sandy soil, usually pine forests, and is found through Florida. The fern is one of the oldest living plants today. It's kind, a spore bearing plant instead of seeds, was the first form of photosynthesis on land. Bacteria and mold also spread by spore. It is a capsule of DNA that is triggered by positive signals from the environment: water, nutrients, temperature.... Plants probably developed as a result of shallow seas throughout land, as algae developed more water-independent adaptations.

Life on land.... probably existed as long as life existed: proteins (prions), viruses, bacteria, molds,... all developed simultaneously to each other. After all, land is the source of nutrients for all life today... Land, ocean basin, volcanic activity....

Species Information

This plant belongs to the Bracken species. It exists on all continents except Antarctica, which is referred to as a cosmopolitan species. It is in the Pteridium genus and is a spore bearing plant.
